What Is a Boo Basket?
A boo basket is basically the Halloween version of a Valentine’s Day gift basket. It’s a curated collection of small, themed items like candy, cozy blankets, candles, mugs, and fun Halloween decor all put together in a basket or bin and given as a surprise. The tradition is similar to “Boo-ing” a neighbor (leaving treats on their doorstep anonymously), but it’s grown into its own gifting tradition, especially for partners, best friends, and family members.
Boo baskets have exploded on Pinterest and TikTok over the past few years because they’re personal, affordable, and easy to customize for literally anyone on your list. A boo basket for a best friend is a fun, low-effort way to show her you were thinking of her this season.
Why Give Your Best Friend a Boo Basket
A boo basket hits a sweet spot that a lot of small gifts! It’s thoughtful without being over the top, and it shows you put real effort into picking things she’ll actually use and enjoy for the Halloween season. A few reasons this has become such a popular tradition between best friends:
- It’s a fun surprise with no occasion needed. You don’t need a birthday as an excuse. Halloween is reason enough.
- It’s easy to personalize. You can build it around her favorite candy, her go-to fall scent, or something she’s mentioned wanting.
- It doubles as a friendship tradition. A lot of best friends do this every year, making it something to look forward to each October.
- It photographs beautifully. If she’s into Pinterest or Instagram, a well-put-together boo basket is genuinely fun to unbox and share.
Now let’s get into an actual basket build. Starting with one I put together entirely from Walmart.
Boo Basket Ideas for Best Friend from Walmart
For this one, I filmed myself building the whole basket from start to finish, and every item came from Walmart. It’s cozy, spooky cute, and easy to recreate even if you’re shopping last minute.
What’s in This Walmart Boo Basket
Oval Black Basket The base of the whole thing. A simple black oval basket keeps the look clean and lets the Halloween pieces stand out instead of fighting with a busy pattern. 🛒 [Shop the basket ]
Texas Halloween Pumpkin and Bats Cotton Throw This is the cozy centerpiece! A soft cotton throw with a pumpkin and bats print that she can actually use on the couch all season, not just look at once and forget. 🛒 [Shop the throw]
Halloween Cat Glass Tumbler A cute, useful gift she’ll reach for daily. The black cat design keeps it playful without feeling like a “kid’s Halloween” item. 🛒 [Shop the tumbler]
Halloween Dancing Skeleton Coffee Mug This one’s just fun! A dancing skeleton mug for her morning coffee that adds a little personality to the basket. 🛒 [Shop the mug] You may include her favorite coffee and creamer for a personlized touch.
Pumpkin Spice 3-Wick Candle The finishing touch. A 3-wick candle throws way more scent than a single wick, and pumpkin spice is the fall scent everyone secretly wants in their basket and it matches the theme. 🛒 [Shop the candle]
Bulk Halloween Candy Bars No boo basket is complete without candy. Going with a bulk bag means you get volume and variety without breaking the budget, and it’s the perfect last touch to fill in any gaps. 🛒 [Shop the candy]
How I Put It Together
- Start with the basket as your base and line the bottom with tissue paper or shredded paper filler so nothing sits flat.
- Add the throw blanket first, Creates height and a soft backdrop for the rest of the items.
- Place the tumbler It’s pairs perfectly with the throw blanket.
- Tuck in the mug on the side so it’s visible but not blocking smaller items.
- Add the candle in an open pocket near the front for scent and visual weight.
- Layer in the bulk candy last, loose or in a small bag, filling in any remaining gaps and adding color.
- Fluff and adjust until nothing looks like it’s about to tip over, then it’s ready to gift (or photograph for Pinterest).
